Artifact 1
University Coach's Observation Notes
This artifact is the notes from my university coach when he observed a lesson that I taught on reading strategies in one of
my Developmental Reading courses. In this lesson I was introducing a new reading strategy called a KWL chart, where the students
fill-in a graphic organizer about a new text that asks: What do you Know? What do you Want to know? What did you Learn?
Teacher: Jay Dater
School: Wheaton HS
Date of Observation: November 14, 2005
Observer: Dan Ebert, Coach
Number of Students: 5
Subject/Time: ESOL Developmental Reading, Period 6
OBJECTIVE(S): To preview new reading
LESSON/PRESENTATION POSITIVES
* Always displays Objective(s)/Agenda for students to see.
* Employs visual graphic organizers.
* Utilizes pre-reading strategies of Preview, Assess Background Knowledge, and KWL.
* Utilizes during reading strategies: Skim & Scan.
* Demonstrates a pleasant and personable style of presentation.
* Makes content relevant by addressing students' experiences.
* Models expectations and products.
Today's lesson utilized effective strategies for introducing a new text (The Crossing). Because the pre-teaching activities
are so vital to the success of any reading assignment, the treatment of this new reading was both necessary and highly effective.
The use of varied instructional strategies made learning accessible for students from different backgrounds and possessing
different learning styles. Most important, however, was the use of proven before and during reading strategies to enhance
motivation and understanding of the text.
Artifact 2
Student Evaluation of Teacher
This artifact is an example of an evaluation a student made of my teaching. This evaluation shows that the student benefited
from my clear explanations and the attention I gave when they were confused. I value this evaluation because it shows that
my efforts to reach students does not go unnoticed.
